Yesterday, Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro after months of rumors and leaks. The new console will cost $700, allowing users to play many games at higher frame rates. However, it does not come with a disc drive, which has led to a surge in demand for PS5 disc drives.

On September 10, Sony announced the PS5 Pro, and the response was mixed. Many were surprised by the $700 price tag, and others were concerned about the lack of a disc drive. Similar to the Xbox Series S and PS5 Digital Edition, the PS5 Pro does not include a disc drive. Nevertheless, Sony offers an optional optical drive for about $80 that is compatible with the PS5 Pro.

In the first 24 hours following the PS5 Pro’s official reveal, it has become increasingly difficult to purchase a PS5 Blu-ray drive. Major retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Target are currently sold out. According to Walmart’s tracker, over 100 people have purchased a PS5 drive in the last day, with an additional 200+ having it in their cart. On Amazon, the PS5 disc drive is the fifth best-selling video game-related item, even outselling physical copies of popular games like Astro Bot.

Availability of Disc Drives

Not all stores have sold out yet. As of this writing, GameStop still has a few available, and the official PlayStation store also appears to have stock. Nevertheless, some individuals are already attempting to resell the disc drives on eBay at prices exceeding the retail cost.

Pre-orders and Future Availability

Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro are scheduled to go live on September 26. Until then, it is expected that securing a PS5 disc drive will become increasingly challenging. Potential buyers should act quickly before resellers drive up prices. Good luck out there!
