Apple Watch Ultra 3: What to Expect from the Upcoming Release

New Apple watches are just around the corner. At Apple’s big Glowtime launch event, we expect to see the iPhone 16 line, two flavors of AirPods 4, and three different wearables: the Apple Watch 10, SE 3, and Ultra 3.

What to Expect from the Apple Watch Ultra 3

The Ultra 3 is anticipated to be an iterative update over the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Therefore, don’t expect any major design overhauls with Apple’s next-gen smartwatches. While the Apple Watch Ultra 2 remains one of the best smartwatches, it’s no longer the only high-end flagship on the market, with the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra now available.

According to supply chain market research firm TrendForce, Apple plans to increase the display size of its next model. The Apple Watch Ultra 3’s screen will reportedly grow to 2.12 inches, a 10% increase compared to the Apple Watch Ultra 2’s 1.9-inch panel. This is a bold move considering the current model’s size, which already feels substantial on the wrist.

Under the Hood Improvements

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 could make greater use of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide transistor tech (LTPO). Current models use LTPO in the display’s switching transistors, but the next iteration could adopt this technology in the driving transistors as well. This should theoretically increase power efficiency, though real-world tests will determine the actual impact.

Health Features and More

Rumors suggest that Apple is working on integrating new health features into its smartwatches, including sleep apnea detection, blood glucose monitoring, and blood pressure readings. However, it’s uncertain if these features will appear in this year’s models. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and 9to5Mac are confident that the next-gen Apple Watches will get an upgraded ECG sensor and sleep apnea detection.

The other two features have faced significant challenges. Apple’s legal battle with Masimo over the blood oxygen monitor has impacted the availability of blood oxygen analysis in U.S. markets. Non-invasive blood glucose readings remain a complex technological challenge.

Should You Upgrade?

Deciding whether to upgrade to the Apple Watch Ultra 3 or stick with the Ultra 2 is challenging. The Ultra 3 appears to be a low-key upgrade, similar to the transition between the first two generations. With major health features still uncertain and the primary upgrade being a slightly larger and potentially more efficient display, it may be wiser to consider Apple Watch Ultra 2 deals instead of waiting for the Ultra 3.

We’ll learn more soon, but based on the current rumors, your money might be better spent on the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
