PlayStation 5 Pro: Leaked Specs Suggest Impressive GPU Upgrade
Introduction
Earlier this year, leaked PlayStation 5 Pro specifications revealed a remarkable increase in GPU power and a transition to AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture. This upgrade not only boosts the WGP (work group processors) but also includes raytracing features from next year’s RDNA 4 GPUs.
GPU Performance
According to the noted leaker, the PlayStation 5 Pro’s GPU will perform on par with an AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT in rasterization. The raytracing performance is expected to be better due to the mentioned features. Our in-depth review of the Radeon RX 7700 XT determined that it could run most games at 4K 60 FPS, but not all. However, it’s important to note that comparing PC and console performance isn’t entirely fair as they are fundamentally different.
CPU Bottleneck Concerns
Unfortunately, the PlayStation 5 Pro might be bottlenecked by its aging Zen 2 CPU, which has only seen marginal improvements over its non-Pro counterpart. Sony’s in-house upscaling solution, PlayStation Super Resolution (PSSR), may have to compensate to achieve 4K 120 FPS gameplay and earn the PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced tag.
Upcoming Reveal
We should have definitive answers on September 9, when Sony is expected to officially unveil the PlayStation 5 Pro.
